With more than 35 years of maritime experience, Captain Shane St. Clair has charted courses across oceans, rivers, and bays in vessels ranging from nimble 16-foot open boats to 150-foot ships. A U.S. Coast Guard–licensed 100-ton Master with sail and towing endorsements, he has completed extraordinary solo voyages of thousands of miles, led sailing expeditions across the Pacific, and commanded vessels for humanitarian missions, reality television, and yacht deliveries around the world.
Captain St. Clair’s career extends beyond the helm—he has raised millions for non-profits, earned recognition as a Certified Fundraising Executive, and spoken at graduations, corporate events, and public forums. Locally, he has captained the Portland Spirit, instructed students as an ASA Sailing Instructor, and since 2013 has commanded the Scovare fleet, offering sailing tours and classroom voyages.
From a 5,000-mile solo “Voyage Through America” to a recent 1,000-mile Pacific Coast passage bringing home his schooner Rose, Captain St. Clair embodies the spirit of exploration. In this program, he will share stories of resilience, seamanship, and leadership—offering pilots a fresh perspective on navigating risk, weather, and endurance at sea that closely parallels the challenges faced in aviation.
