Papua New Guinea in a Piper Comanche
Papua New Guinea in a Piper Comanche
with John Van Bladeren, CAA Member
John will regale us with stories about flying from Southern Australia up to Horn Island, just off the North Coast of Australia. From there the 10 day Comanche Safari around Papua New Guinea starts in the 80 NM flight across the Tores Strait to Mt Hagen in the West highland. Continuing, the safari goes to Rabaul (WWII Japanese Air base) at the east end of NewBritania, then back to Madang, eventually spending 5 days sight-seeing from a boat on the Sepic River.
Weather is the biggest challenge in flying in that part of the world. Morning fog would clear by 10am. Thunderstorms start at 1pm. All flying is done VFR. The natives in villages were very nice and engaging. The people in Cities were scary.
Please Note: Until further notice programs at the CAA clubhouse are limited to FULLY VACCINATED MEMBERS and GUESTS only. Thank you for your help protecting the health and lives of our members as well as their families and friends.
