Short Take Off and Landing 747-400 By Captain Ossie Miller
About this event
Speaker: Ossie Miller
In 2015, Qantas Airlines retired VH-OJA "The City of Canberra", a Boeing 747-400 after some 25 years' service. The aircraft, which flew non-stop on its delivery flight from London to Sydney in 1989 was Qantas’s first 747-400. At the time, this flight set a new record for the world's longest flight by a commercial aircraft - decades before project sunrise was conceived.
VH-OJA was donated to Historical Aviation Restoration Society (HARS) museum at the Wollongong airport (YSHL),
Our speaker tonight, OSSIE MILLER, Bowral NSW, captained that plane for many years and was part of team which delivered the plane to Wollongong. The challenge in the delivery was the runway length which at 1800 Meters is shorter than 31L at KHIO.
Mr. Miller was with Qantas for 29+ years, and B747 Fleet Captain 2010-2015 before retiring. He is a B787 Type Rated Instructor (Tri)/Check Pilot. He has a total flying experience 18,700 hrs on wide body heavy jet transport types (B747/B767), holds ratings of Airline Transport Pilot, Command Instrument Rating and type rated B747 (current) and B767.
